Before anything else, I would like to ask everyone.....
Do you know what Green Thumb is?
Do you have a Green thumb?
Do you know someone who has a green thumb?
Me too.... I know someone who has green thumb! This family definitely has a Green thumb! They could grow different crops.
Me too.... I know someone who has green thumb! This family definitely has a Green thumb! They could grow different crops.
These fellows too...
How about me?
A person who has a Green Thumb could basically grow any plants they like. Whether they will start from seeds or cuttings, they grow it very well. That is according to my grandmother.
Ako walang green thumb.... Brown ang thumb ko eh! hehehe...
How did I knew I don't have green thumb? Why I don't have a green thumb?
When I was grade 3 to 6, uso noon sa mga elementary schools yung may mga sales representative na bibisita sa class room ninyo, tapos magbebenta sila ng seeds ng mga bulaklak at gulay plus may maliit pa na pack na may lamang white granules or powder na kung tawagin nila ay fertilizers. (After 6 years, saka ko lang nalamang urea fertilizer pala yun)
Naranasan n'yo rin ba ito?
Every year, I bought these seeds. I usually pick sun flower seeds. Babae eh! And the most important thing for me that time was the extra points I could have if i bought those seeds.
And so, the day I want to sow these seeds has come.
I planted this sunflower seeds at the vacant soil beside our house. As a kid, I applied what I remember from our botany class. In order for the seeds to grow, it needs soil, water and sunlight. That time those are the 3 important things I remember.
What I did was.....
1. I dug a hole and put the seeds on that hole. (I have no idea how deep it was. I just dug.)
2. Cover it with soil. If I remember it correctly, the color of the soil is light brown loam soil.
3. Water it.
4. I water it every afternoon after school.
After 5 days of sowing, what do you think I did?????
And so, the seeds did not germinate.
I am not sad that time. I just thought, the seeds were fake. Hahahaha!
At dahil excited uli ako magtanim ng sunflower, I do the same procedure in take one.
The only difference as far as I remember ay ang pagdidilig ng mas madaming araw kumpara sa una kong tinanani.
Because I was not successful with a sunflower seeds, I chose pechay seeds when I was in grade 6.
This is what I did.
1. I sprinkle those tiny seeds at the soil beside our house.
2. I cover it with another layer of soil.
3. I water it every day. This time I am sure that I water it every afternoon after school for straight 2 weeks.
4. And then some seeds germinate and showed its tiny leaves..
5. It is so cute! I was so excited to harvest it.
So I continue watering it every day. Then one day the small pechay suddenly died. It looks like melted seedlings.
Why they died and how they died? I am clueless....
Why they died and how they died? I am clueless....
I shared this story to my grand mother and auntie. They told me, " Di ka nagmana sa amin. Wala kang green thumb. Mainit yang kamay mo sa mga halaman.
I was so sad. And I lost interest in planting again.
I was in high school when I have to grow pechay again. It was part of our class activity for agriculture subject. This time it was a group activity. It was more scary this time. Kapag wala kami ma- harvest, wala din kaming magandang grade.
So me and my group mates followed the procedure carefully.
1. Prepare the soil.
2. We create a shallow holes. each has 20 cm distance. This is what we supposedly do... but....
We didn't use ruler we just estimate it. Isang dangkal kada butas. but there are chances that I just make holes on whatever distance I like.
Each students have their own row where we planted the seeds of pechay. Luckily our teacher did not require us to put our name in our row. I am safe!
3. Put 2 to 3 seeds per hole.
I remember I also didn't follow this instruction. Pechay seeds were too small? So I put as much as I want just to be sure. hehehe!
4. Cover it with soil then water it.
I did this perfectly!
5. We have to check it everyday during our agriculture class. Then water it. Its a group effort and we were reminded everytime in agriculture subject class that we have water it. That is why I didn't forgot we are growing pechay. But, because our class is only monday to friday, our pechay plants were thirsty every saturday and sunday....
The good news was they grew and live. Well not all of them.
Some seeds did not germinate.
There are some spots where too many seeds geminated. And soon cutworms ate their leaves.
Along the way most of the pechay suddenly died for some reasons I don't understand and I didn't bother knowing it.
In the end, I harvested pechay!!!!!!! YEHEY!!!!!!
Though I don't think I remember harvesting more than 20% of what I planted!
By the way, some of my classmates harvested more than mine and some had worst case scenarios than me...
My thumb was not that bad after all. Of course salamat sa mga masisipag kong groupmates.
TAKE 5 and many more takes to come....
My Mom said "Nak, kung di education ang kunin mong course, mag-agriculture kanalang. Kasi yun walang retirement. Kahit matanda kana pwede ka pa din mag tanim."
I took agriculture course not because I wanted it. My Mom encourage me to took it.
I really wanted to become a teacher. But along the way, I got confused. (this is another story...)
I just took agriculture course in the end.
I am insane! How can I pass this course if I don't have green thumb....
♣ If I only know okra, pechay and sitao as a plant...... kilala ko nalang yung iba kapag luto na.
♣ If I don't know if sayote (chayote) is root crops or fruit trees..... (I found out wala sa 2 option na to ang sagot)
♣ If I the only fruits I know is mango, banana, papaya and guava as a tree.... I only know other fruits if they are already in fruit salad or fruit stand.
I was worried and anxious. I told to myself I'm already in to this so I have to make it work Or else I will be wasting my time and my parents money.
Along the road of "academic street" (Academic school years), I learned so many things. I realize that everything is govern with science. Their are history, a process and principles.
I will discover what these green thumbs do to grow healthy plants.
I also realized, not having a green thumb was not my problem.
After I graduated, I am so bless to practice profession my profession right away.
All the principle I learned academically become more clear to me. I understood it more.
I learn more in real agriculture world. The real world of agriculture where I am now is like a pool of knowledge willing to be exchange with new things.
The farmers I encounter know more compare to me. As I help them improve their farming technique, and share things I learned from the others, I gain more experience and learned new things in exchange.
As of this very moment I already fulfilled my dream to become a teacher even though I took BS Agriculture. And the good news was, di limited ang students ko. From kindergarden to professionals. From beginners to farmers. And every time ang bonus ko palagi ako may natutunang bago sakanila. At ibinabagi ko rin sa iba.
I really wanna know what green thumbs do to have bountiful harvest. I hope to share it to others so every home will grow their own food. If this will happen this will become our help to food sustainability. Tamad nalang ang magugutom!
Come, join and learn with me in my pursuit of having the Green Thumb....
